Car Of The Day: 2006 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren

Produced from 2003 to 2010, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren was a testament to the combined expertise of Mercedes-Benz and their Formula 1 partner, McLaren. It showcased advanced technologies reminiscent of the legendary 1955 300 SLR. Despite its classification as a supercar, the SLR is a luxurious, finely engineered Gran Turismo in the best tradition of Mercedes-Benz.

The SLR McLaren’s engine, created by Mercedes-Benz’s AMG division, is a 5.5-liter, 24-valve, supercharged V8 delivering 617bhp. This powerhouse engine, notable for its torque, produces 440lb/ft at 1,500 rpm and exceeds 500lb/ft between 3,000 and 5,000 rpm, offering remarkable elasticity and passing performance.

To maximize fuel efficiency, the supercharger activates only when the accelerator is floored. The SLR McLaren’s performance remains exceptional, sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.8 seconds, reaching 200 km/h (125 mph) in 10.6 seconds, and achieving a top speed of 334 km/h (207 mph).

Designed for optimal weight distribution and handling, the SLR features a front-engined layout with a dry-sump lubrication system, a specially optimized five-speed automatic transmission, and the Speedshift system.

Its carbon fiber composite monocoque body was produced at McLaren’s Woking facility, showcasing Formula 1-inspired double wishbone suspension, speed-sensitive steering, and advanced braking systems. The SLR’s ceramic brake discs and electronically controlled rear spoiler enhance stability and braking performance, making it a technological marvel among supercars.
