~ Sent to us by Greg Cheeney, Captain / Engineer and the Members of Langdon Fire and Rescue
We would like to share the story of our towns first Fire Truck. A 1946 Willys CJ-2A. With a PTO driven 400 gpm pump on front, ladders on top and hose bed in back. Our town purchased this Willys in 1952 and have kept it ever since. We are a rural town in South Western NH where the off-road capability of the Jeep is very useful. Whether in snow or mud we could always get to the water source.
Over the years there were repairs needed, first in 1970 it was repainted. Then in the early 2000s we gained new interest and began some mechanical repairs. Including a new carburetor, rear springs, rear main seal in the engine and whole new wiring harness. Luckily we discovered Kaiser Willys, where we sourced the parts needed.
Our Jeep has won many trophies at local parades and always draws much attention. As for pumping, as seen in the picture from June 2023, it still pumps like when it was brand new. When hooked up to the pump testing equipment at an antique fire truck show, it still puts out 400 gpm. The members of Langdon fire and Rescue are very proud of this Willys and the many generations who relied on its service. Since the repairs, our CJ-2A is only used for parades and shows, however if it were needed it would not let us down.
