Appleston, Wisconsin considers restricting food truck hours

Alders in Appleston, Wisconsin are considering an ordinance that would restrict hours that food trucks can operate downtown, after there were several shootings in the evening in the area. City staff are concerned that intoxicated individuals congregating late at night at food trucks can cause incidents, according to a report by We Are Green Bay.com.

This ordinance will prevent food truck owners from operating after midnight. Currently the limit is 4 a.m.

« We have 20 plus years of disturbances related to the crowds that gather at bar time with obviously people being under the influence of alcohol, » Polly Olson, police chief in Appleston, said in the report. « It seems to be happening in the 400 and 500 block of West College Avenue where our food trucks like to park and where our ride shares are also present. It seems to be a recipe for bad things to happen, we’re just looking for some solutions for that. »

Food truck owners argue that this measure would unfairly target them.

« I don’t think the food truck is the real issue, I think the over-serving (alcohol to patrons at the bars) and the crowd control is, » Reggie Desamour, owner of Area 509 and Caribbean Taste Food Truck, said in the report.

The alders plan to approve or modify the ordinance at a later date.
